Pickleball has swung into popularity and is only getting more so. The fastest-growing sport in the U.S., it has millions of players and at least 38,000 courts, some of which are in Lexington, of course. If you’re looking to find a game, check out our guide to the best places to play.

Best Places to Play Pickleball in Lexington, KY

Introduction to Pickleball

Invented in 1965, pickleball is a racquet sport similar to tennis but with elements of ping-pong. It’s played with a perforated, hollow plastic ball and a smooth-faced paddle larger than a ping-pong paddle. At 34″, the net is lower than for tennis, and the court is the size of a badminton court—a quarter the size of a tennis court.

You can play singles or doubles, and it’s a very fast-paced sport that’s easy to learn but highly competitive once you know what you’re doing. It’s often played in doubles, creating teamwork and a vibrant social scene. Pickleball is often played open, show up, and you’ll be assigned a partner. Most people can play decently after an hour of instruction. All you need is a ball, a paddle, and, of course, to know where a court is.

In special recycling bins, you can responsibly dispose of cracked and worn pickleball balls at Kirklevington Park.

Local Parks With Pickleball Facilities

Local parks are a great place to find a pickleball court. Several parks have outdoor courts, specifically.

  • Gardenside
  • Kirklevington
  • River Hill
  • Meadowthorpe
  • Cardinal Run North (coming soon).
  • Meadowbrook
  • Lansdowne-Merrick Park
  • Mount Tabor Park

Kirklevington has 12 courts and is the largest facility in the area. It has brand new, permanent outdoor courts that are available for open play every day, and there are almost always people there. The courts at Meadowthrope, Lansdowne-Merrick, and Mount Tabor are double-striped for both pickleball and tennis.

Community Centers Offering Pickleball

Lexington will soon have a special facility, Pickleball Paddock. In the interim, other community centers have courts. The North Lexington and Whitaker YMCA have courts for outdoor play, and the Lexington Senior Center has a court reserved for members and their guests.

The North Lexington and Whitaker YMCAs, as well as the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA, have indoor courts for days when it’s raining or too hot to play outside.

There are even a couple of churches – Calvary Baptist Church and Tales Creek Christian Church – with their courts.

Private Clubs and Venues

Some sports clubs also have indoor pickleball courts. These include:

  • Sports Center Lexington offers open play Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for members or drop-ins, with an $8 fee.
  • Bluegrass Racquet Club has open play Tuesday and Thursday from 1 pm to 3 pm and offers pickleball-only membership.
  • Lexington Tennis Club offers clinics but no open play.
  • Top Seed has clinics for beginners and intermediate players and does a special session with glow-in-dark balls on the first Friday of each month.
  • The Yard is a major indoor sports facility that is open in the evenings and weekends.

All of these venues do offer pickleball and some are great places to get lessons, whether you’re just starting or want to sharpen your game.
