All About the Georgetown Area
This location, with Elkhorn Creek running through it, has been a draw for people for millennia, with indigenous people living here as far back as 15,000 years ago.
It became a US settlement in 1783 when people built homes near the north fork of Elkhorn Creek. This new settlement was located approximately five miles west of the current city of Georgetown. The town was originally called Creat Crossing, but its name was changed the next year to Lebanon.
In 1790, it underwent another name change, and it became known as George Town, to honor George Washington. At the time, the area was a part of Virginia, but two years later, Kentucky became the 15th state in the Union.
Georgetown was remarkable in many ways. It boasted the state’s first classical school, as well as its first grist, saw, and paper mills. The commerce of the area was primarily agriculture, but in the 1900s, Scott County transitioned toward manufacturing and small businesses, as well as some remaining family farms. In 1985, Georgetown became the site of Toyota’s first US assembly plant.
